Driving Directions From points north via Birmingham and I-65

Take I-65 South to Montgomery, then follow the signs for I-85 North towards Atlanta. From the I-65/I-85 junction, take Exit 1 (Court Street) onto the exit ramp (Arba Street). At the intersection of Arba and Union Streets, turn left onto Union. You will pass under the I-85 interstate onto Union Street – a one-way, four-lane street. (Caution: if you proceed on Arba you will be entering the on-ramp for I-85 south.) Continue north on Union Street. Turn left at the 4th traffic light onto Washington Avenue. The front of the Alabama Department of Archives and History building is to your left across from the Avenue of Flags on the side of the state Capitol.

From points south and west via Mobile and I-65:

Take I-65 North to Montgomery and follow the signs to I-85 North towards Atlanta. After turning onto I-85 North, follow directions to the Alabama Department of Archives and History as indicated above.

From points east via Atlanta and I-85:

Take I-85 South to Exit 1 for Union Street. Veer right onto South Union - a one-way, four-lane street. Turn left at the 3rd traffic light onto Washington Avenue. The front of the Alabama Department of Archives and History building is to your left across from the Avenue of Flags on the side of the state Capitol. On-street parking is available around the Archives building on Washington Avenue, Bainbridge Street, and Adams Avenue/Street. Limited off-street parking is also available in the Archives parking lot across from the rear (south) entrance of the building off Adams Avenue. Please note the south entrance bears the inscription ALABAMA WORLD WAR MEMORIAL above the doors.

Parking

Metered on-street parking is available around the Archives building on Washington Avenue, Bainbridge Street, and Adams Avenue/Street. Free limited off-street parking is also available in the Archives parking lot across from the rear (south) entrance of the building off Adams Street. Please note the south entrance bears the inscription ALABAMA WORLD WAR MEMORIAL above the doors.

Tour Bus Unloading and Parking:

Bus drivers, please follow the above directions to Union Street. From Union Street turn left at the traffic light onto HIGH STREET (the first traffic light from I-85 South or the 2nd traffic light from I-85 North). At the next intersection turn right onto Bainbridge Street. Go up the hill through the Adams Avenue/Street intersection. The bus passenger unloading zone is on the right side of Bainbridge Street, after the Adams Avenue traffic light and before the Washington Avenue round-about. THIS AREA IS FOR PASSENGER UNLOADING AND LOADING ONLY. After unloading passengers, bus drivers should proceed through the Washington Avenue round-about to the front of the State Capitol. Turn left on Dexter Avenue at the front of the Capitol. Turn left again at the next traffic light onto South Decatur Street. Travel south on Decatur Street to the 2nd traffic light and turn left onto Adams Street. After the traffic light at the next intersection (Bainbridge Street and Adams Street), the Archives parking lot is on the right in the middle of the block -- directly across from the Archives and History (Alabama World War Memorial) south entrance and just past the Alabama Cattlemen's Association. Park buses in the bus lane on the right side of the parking lot while tour is in progress.

At the end of the tour, return to the bus loading location to pick up students. Exit the parking lot via the rear entrance on Alabama Street. Turn right out of the parking lot and right again onto Bainbridge Street to return to the bus loading location. Return to the Interstate via South Decatur Street.
